HANOI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- President of the United States Barack Obama on Monday announced to lift a decades-long arms embargo on Vietnam.
Obama made the announcement at a press conference co--chaired with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang in Vietnam's capital Hanoi during ongoing Obama's visit to the country.
Obama also made it clear that the United States may sell military weapons to Vietnam under a case-by-case basis, when answering questions from media during the conference.
The Vietnamese president, for his part, said that "Vietnam welcomes U.S. decision to completely lift arms embargo on Vietnam."
The U.S. imposed arms embargo on Vietnam in 1984.

Commentary: Advancing Washington-Hanoi ties should not risk regional stability
BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Efforts for the improvement of U.S.-Vietnam ties should be driven by common pursuit to benefit the Asia-Pacific region while generating interests to both sides, rather than a one-sided, selfish agenda that would add risks to regional peace and stability.
To improve relations between the two former bitter foes, U.S. President Barack Obama kicks off a Vietnam visit on Sunday, the first of its kind in his term and the third consecutive one by a U.S. leader since the two countries normalized ties in 1995, two decades after the end of their bloodstained 19-year war. News Analysis: Obama's visit to Vietnam more about prying, less about partnership
HO CHI MINH CITY, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Both Vietnamese and U.S. officials have hailed U.S. President Barack Obama's planned visit to Vietnam as a historic one, but it will be more symbolic than substantive, creating no breakthrough in bilateral ties, observers have said.
Obama's trip to Vietnam slated for May 23-25 is the first by a U.S. president since George W. Bush visited in 2006 and the third visit by a U.S. president since the two countries established bilateral diplomatic relations in July 1995.Full Story
Commentary: Time for Washington to self-question its Asia-Pacific policy
BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- In the countdown to a farewell to the White House and prior to perhaps his last visit to Asia as a sitting U.S. president, Barack Obama should reflect upon his policies that failed to contribute to regional peace and stability.

Hollywood decamped to Cannes Wednesday where Woody Allen's new romantic yarn set in cinema's golden age received mixed reviews from critics as it launched the world's top film festival.
The first red carpet of the festival lit up with some of film's biggest names, as a forecast downpour stayed away long enough for them to saunter up the stairs of the main festival venue.
There were the stars of Allen's Cafe Society - Twilight megastar turned indie darling Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg and a pregnant Blake Lively who exclaimed: "It didn't rain!"
Susan Sarandon - in town for a series of talks on women in the film industry - coolly walked up the carpet in a suit and flat shoes in a pointed dig at Cannes' traditional dress code.
Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria Nike Air Max 97 Soldes Pas Cher , Jessica Chastain, Justin Timberlake, Julianne Moore and Naomi Watts also set cameras flashing before they sat down to enjoy Allen's third film to open the 12-day festival.
Critics Nike Air Max 90 Soldes Pas Cher , who saw the film earlier, praised the film's beauty and the performances of Stewart and Eisenberg, of The Social Network fame Nike Air Max 2019 Soldes Pas Cher , but complained it lacked depth.
"Watchable as it is, (it) never quite overcomes the sense that it's a lavish diagram working hard to come off as a real movie," wrote Variety critic Owen Gleiberman.
"It's one of those Allen films that keeps talking about passion instead of actually making the audience feel it."
Shot in dreamy technicolor hues Nike Air Max Soldes France Pas Cher , it highlights what another critic called "the selfishness of being happy" as Stewart and Eisenberg voyage through infidelity and heartbreak from 1930s Hollywood to bohemian New York.
The film follows Bobby (Eisenberg) as he heads to Hollywood to score a job with his big-shot agent uncle Phil - played by Steve Carell - and falls in love with his winsome secretary and mistress Vonnie (Stewart).
'Sweet, sad, insubstantial'
"Woody Allen's Cafe Society is a sweet Nike Air Max Soldes Livraison Gratuite Pas Cher , sad, insubstantial jeu d'esprit, watchable Nike Air Max Femme Soldes Pas Cher , charming and beautifully shot," wrote Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw, praising Stewart and Eisenberg for "charming and intelligent" performances.
A spate of self-deprecating jokes steeped in Allen's Jewish heritage drew the most laughs from the audience.
The director said that Stewart Nike Air Max Homme Soldes Pas Cher , set for a stellar Cannes where she will also appear in competition film Personal Shopper, had been perfect for the role.
"I needed somebody who could play an adorable little secretary from Nebraska - this sweet little girl just as cute as a button - and later in the movie you could see her in furs and jewels and she would be... completely believable," he said.
Stewart Grossiste Nike Air Max 98 Soldes Pas Cher , sporting a sharp bleach blonde bob and dressed all in white, is known more for her edginess than cuteness and looked amused at the description.
"I auditioned for this part. I really had to prove myself because I don't know if that lovely little lady was something he saw immediately."
Eisenberg's Woody script
Her co-star Eisenberg was left red-faced when a reporter revealed he had written a script about Woody Allen when he was a teenager.
"I was so inspired by discovering Woody Allen that I wrote a script that was based on him and it got sent to agents because they thought it was funny and it got sent to his lawyers who didn't think it was funny In the world.
